OCS NZ achieves carbonreduce certification

Facilities management services company releases sustainability report.

New Zealand’s largest facilities management services company, OCS, has achieved Toitū Envirocore carbonreduce certification – the first major company in its industry to do so.

The accreditation was noted in the company’s recently released sustainability report, outlining the organisation’s commitment to sustainability throughout 2019.

OCS ANZ managing director, Gareth Marriott, said much of what OCS has achieved has been accomplished through partnering with innovative industry leaders.

“We’ve worked closely with partners like Ecotricity, New Zealand’s only provider of 100 percent renewable and carboNZero certifies electricity, to slash our usage. In 2019, we avoided 168,422.38 kgs of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to almost 30 homes’ electricity use for one year.”

Changing energy providers, alongside multiple other measures like reducing air travel (both international and domestic) and vehicle usage has seen OCS reduce its carbon emissions by 20 per cent since 2017.

Marriott said the company’s involvement with Toitū Envirocare is an ongoing commitment to set and achieve fresh targets each year, and what that means is coming up with new and innovative ways of doing things.

The sustainability report looks at the company’s dedication to all three of its sustainability pillars: People, Environment and Community.

“One of OCS’s strategic objectives is to be the most environmentally sustainable business in the facilities management sector by 2030,” Marriott said.

“We have made significant strides in addressing our sustainability pillars through our team and the amazing people we choose to partner with and I’m confident we’ll achieve this target.”

Sustainable Business Council executive director, Mike Burrell, welcomes the OCS report as a positive example of sustainable business being synonymous with business success.

“Comprising some of the most essential workers who kept New Zealand running during lockdown earlier this year, we welcome OCS’s sustainability report with its focus on people, the environment and community.”

“OCS is a long-time member of the Sustainable Business Council and their commitment to advancing their sustainability journey in line with the Sustainable Development Goals shows the way for other New Zealand businesses.”

OCS is New Zealand’s largest facilities management services company. Globally, the company extends to more than 86,000 team members worldwide servicing more than 20,000 customers across sectors including retail, healthcare, education, manufacturing, aviation and commercial and more.
